Workshop on new food networks in Brazil

The ATTER workshop “The construction of new food networks: reflections on the role of actors in the democratization of access to quality food” was organised, within Karine Nunes’ (PNRMA) secondment to UFRGS, in Florianopolis, Brazil, by the Federal University of Santa Catarina and INRAE (13rd February 2023).

The event was hosted at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), in Florianópolis/Santa Catarina, organized by UFSC, INRAE and PNRMA and brought together around 30 people in person and online: graduate and undergraduate students, researchers and public policy actors concerned with these issues. It was structured in three sessions.

The first on how family agro-industries in the state of Santa Catarina are crucial in valuing qualities and building markets and are becoming components of a basket of territorial goods and service, organized by the Laboratory of Agricultural and Territorial Multifunctionality Studies (LEMATE) and presented by Marina Bustamante Ribeiro (UFSC) and Adinor José Capellesso (IFSC São Miguel do Oeste).

The second one on the experience of “Responsible consumer cells” in Greater Florianopolis designed to create a direct link between producer organizations and a group of consumers and how this initiative has been able to configurate an agri-food citizenship network in this territory, organized by the Laboratory of Family Farming Commercialization (LACAF) and presented by Marina Carrieri de Souza (UFSC) and Adevan da Silva Pugas (UFSC).

The third and last session revolved around the presentation (implementation methods, history) and discussions (potentialities and limits) about French Territorial Food Projects (PATs). A focus on the experiences on the Ardèche territory was made. This session was organized by INRAE and PNRMA and presented by Claire Lamine (INRAE) and Karine Nunes (Regional Natural Park of the Monts d’Ardèche and INRAE).

WK in Brazil new food networks - talks

At the end of the three sessions, a debate was moderated by Paola Rebollar, member of LEMATE. Many important issues discussed remain to be explored in the ATTER project or other collaborative projects, such as access to food, food democracy, meaningful participation and territorial solidarity. These discussions and exchanges between France and Brazil are being especially helpful in the "reconstruction" phase that is taking place in Brazil, as was said by the state deputy Marcos José de Abreu (PSOL) at the end of the workshop, while French debates symmetrically benefit from these interactions with the Brazilian reflections and experiences.
